Traffic Signals
- Steady red: Full stop. Wait for green.
- Steady yellow: Signal is about to turn red. Stop if you safely can.
- Steady green: Proceed if the intersection is clear.
- Flashing red: Treat like a stop sign. Stop, then proceed when safe.
- Flashing yellow: Slow down, proceed with caution. No stop required.
- Green arrow: Protected turn. Other traffic is stopped.
- Flashing yellow arrow: You may turn, but oncoming traffic has the right of way.
- Red arrow: No turn in the direction of the arrow.
Right of Way Basics
- At a 4-way stop, the driver who arrived first goes first. If tied, the driver on the right goes first.
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, even unmarked ones.
- Emergency vehicles with lights and sirens always have the right of way. Pull to the right and stop.
- School buses: stop when the red lights flash and the stop arm is extended, in both directions unless you are on a divided highway with a physical barrier.
- Funeral processions have the right of way as a group.
Illinois Age Requirements
| Age | What You Can Do |
|---|---|
| 15 | Apply for instruction permit (must be enrolled in driver ed) |
| 16 | Apply for graduated driver's license after 9 months with permit |
| 17 | Still subject to graduated license restrictions |
| 18 | Apply for permit without driver ed requirement; full license available |
| 21 | Legal drinking age — DUI zero tolerance ends but 0.08 BAC limit applies |
Alcohol and Drugs
- Adult BAC limit: 0.08%
- Commercial drivers: 0.04%
- Under 21: Zero tolerance — any measurable alcohol means license suspension
- Illinois has an implied consent law — refusing a breath or blood test results in automatic license suspension
Seat Belts and Child Safety
- Drivers and all passengers must wear seat belts, front and back seat.
- Children under age 8 must be in an appropriate child restraint.
- Children under age 2 must be in a rear-facing car seat unless they exceed the seat's height or weight limit.
